Course summary

The award will give you a broad introduction to the Health and Social Care sector. Unit 1: Building Positive Relationships in Health and Social Care. - This unit aims to introduce you to the many different relationships that you will encounter within the health and social care sector, whether with colleagues, senior members of staff, other professionals or those requiring care and support. You will practically apply communication and relationship-building skills. The unit also involves students doing some work experience to complete a 1:1 and group interaction with either children or the elderly. Unit 2: Equality, diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care. - This unit will help you to understand the implications of diversity on practice and also the effects of discriminatory practice on individuals who require care or support. Everyone is different and everyone has rights. Promoting and respecting diversity and rights in health and social care and childcare environments is essential in today’s very diverse society. The focus of the unit is for students to understand how health and social care settings support individual rights, value their diversity and provide equal opportunities to meet their needs. Unit 3: Health, safety and security in health and social care. - This unit introduces you to health, safety and security in health and social care. You will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to equip you to maintain a safe working environment for yourself, your colleagues and individuals who need care and support. You will learn how legislation, policies and procedures work to reduce the risks in health and social care and the consequences of not following them.

Entry requirements

To study this subject, it is usual to have achieved grade 5 or better in maths, English and Science. Some students may be accepted with grade 4 and their teacher’s recommendation. Students need a genuine interest in health and social care and be able to meet the demands of coursework.
