In Year 13, there is also an exploration of how children learn language. Language Varieties, Diversity and Change: An exploration of varieties in English, including attitudes to diversity and exploring language in its social and geographical contexts. In Year 13, there is also an exploration of how language has changed over time. There are two pieces of coursework: an investigation into a chosen aspect of language and a piece of original writing with commentary worth an overall 20%.

Paper 1: Language, the Individual and Society • Section A – Textual variations and representations two texts, linked by topic or theme. A question requiring analysis of one text A question requiring analysis of a second A question requiring comparison of the two texts. • Section B – Children's language development. A question on an aspect of how children learn to talk. Paper 2: Language Diversity and Change • Section A – Diversity and Change Topics here include: The language of occupation, gender, sociolect and accent and the significance of language changes in the last thousand years. • Section B – Language Discourses. A study of structure and comparison across one topic. This section includes a piece of non-fiction creative writing. Non-exam assessment (coursework): Language in action. A language investigation (2000 words) and a piece of original writing and commentary (1500 words) .
