Course summary

This course provides a highly specialised work-related qualification in the health, social care and early year’s sectors. It gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to prepare for higher education, apprenticeships or employment. Students will undertake a variety of units that provide an in-depth understanding of Health and Social sectors. Topics will include roles, responsibilities, skills and attributes of people who work within the health and care sector, human development across the lifespan, and how different factors effect development, including the impact of physiological disorders. The skills that are of most help through the course are good organisation, the ability to work independently, and good communication skills.

Entry requirements

• No previous study or qualification is necessary to study this course. • At least a Grade 5 or above in English is desirable.

How you'll be assessed

Students will develop their critical-thinking skills, resilience and interpersonal skills and learn how to research actively and independently and become an effective writer during internally assessed coursework units. Alongside this, students will sit external examinations (58% of the Extended Certificate). Students will receive exam technique training as part of the development of exam-based skills. Mandatory units: • Unit 1 (90-minute exam) - Human lifespan development • Unit 2 (90-minute exam) - Working in health and social care • Unit 5 (Internally assessed coursework) - Meeting individual care and support needs Additional Unit: • Unit 12: Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs
