Course summary

Film is a powerful and culturally significant medium – it is an art form in itself. As an A-level Film Studies student, you will have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of films and broaden your knowledge and understanding of the range of responses films can generate within the audience and society itself. As part of the A-level course, students will study mainstream American films from the past and the present as well as a range of recent and contemporary British films; American independent films and also global films. In addition, students will also examine silent films and other significant film movements so that they can gain a sense of the development of film from its early years to its still emerging digital future. Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE English Language.

How you'll be assessed

In terms of assessment, all students will sit two exams at the end of the two-year A-level course. These exams are worth 70% of the final A-level grade. The remaining 30% of the overall grade is made up of the non-examined assessment. For this piece, students will be required to write a screenplay for a short film plus a digitally photographed storyboard of a key section from the screenplay, along with an evaluative analysis.
