Course summary

This course is for the people who are interested in the world places, peoples and environments, interested in local, regional and global issues, and have an interest in exploring human, physical and environmental geographical relationships. Over the two years of this course you will study four areas but this will cover nine topics. The first area, Dynamic landscapes. This covers two topics, Topic 1, Tectonic processes and hazards. Topic 2, Coastal landscapes and change. Second area, Dynamic places and this also covers two topics Topic 3, Globalisation. Topic 4, Regenerating places. Third area, Physical systems and Sustainability, this area covers three topics, Topic 5, The water cycle and water insecurity. Topic 6, The carbon cycle and energy security. You will also study the links between these cycles through climate change. Fourth area, Human systems and geopolitics, this area covers two topics. Topic 8, Superpowers. Topic 9 Health, Human Rights, and Intervention. In Year 12 you will participate in a coastal geography visit and will also conduct an investigation into urban regeneration. Fieldwork can be a great experience, which allows you to apply your knowledge in a practical way. You will visit the Northumberland coast to study coastal processes and study urban regeneration. Depending on interest, we also run a visit to Iceland to experience the tectonic processes and impacts of globalisation.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in English Language and 4 Geography

How you'll be assessed

This course is assessed by three examinations at the end of Year 13 and one non-examined assessment (coursework) which is completed in the Summer term of Y12 and Autumn term of Y13. Paper 1 covers physical geography. Paper 2 covers human geography. Paper 3 focuses on an investigation into a geographical issue. The coursework allows you to focus on a geographical issue of your choice, collect data, analyse your findings and present them in 3000-4000 words.
