Course summary

This two-year course provides a valuable insight into engineering for students intending to pursue a wide range of careers within the technology and engineering disciplines. This qualification is a long standing route into employment within either the electrical or mechanical industries as a technician and it also qualifies you for progression to higher education – either HNC, HND or university. You will design, make and test engineering products as well as explore the theory behind a variety of engineering disciplines. You will examine existing engineering products and investigate the role of the engineer in their design, manufacture and function. You will also study the science and maths which underpin engineering. Welding and fabrication units are also studied to develop practical workshop skills more fully as well as enrichment activities in machining. We have excellent engineering resources to accommodate all the practical aspects of the course and you will also have the opportunity to be trained in industry. You will also have opportunities for residential visits and trips to engineering related organisations.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4 including Maths and English Language or equivalent, however, a grade 5 in Maths is desirable. This course is for school leavers. If you are over 18, please contact our Admissions team to see if it is possible to study this course.

How you'll be assessed

The course consists of both mandatory and optional units and a mixture of internal and external assessment methods are used. Internally assessed units are assessed by the successful completion of a portfolio of assignments, practicals and project work for each unit. Three of the mandatory units are externally assessed. One is a written paper and the other two are more ‘scenario’ based that are set and marked by the awarding body but facilitated by us.
