A level Biology provides you with the opportunity to become involved in the study of living things. As a Shireland Sixth Form Biology student, you will study topics such as cell biology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology and ecology. Biologists now find themselves as one of the top ten most employable graduates; with a 100% pass rate at Biology, we have the experience to support your success in this subject. An integral part of our teaching is practical work and all Shireland Sixth Form students will be expected to use biological equipment including colorimeters, microscopes, ecological sampling and microbial growth apparatus.
Level 5 in five separate subjects at GCSE including English and Mathematics and a 6 in Biology Students are expected to achieve a minimum of grade 5 or above at GCSE to be considered for A Level and BTEC courses.
As this is a linear course all examinations will take place at the end of Year 13. There are three examinations which will each assess various content from all topics as well as relevant practical skills. • Paper 1 covers topics 1-4 and will contribute 35% of the final A Level grade. • Paper 2 covers topics 5-8 and will contribute 35% of the final A Level grade. • Paper 3 covers content from all 8 topics and will contribute 30% of the final A Level.
