Course summary

Course Aims: • Explore the festivals, music, and traditions of Spain and Spanish-speaking countries to gain a broad appreciation of Spanish culture. • Learn and research the media in Spanish-speaking countries and their influence. • Investigate the evolution of Spanish multicultural society and its social issues, giving you a clear insight into Spanish life. • Learn about Spanish politics and history, and its impact on today’s society. • Research and learn about Spanish-speaking authors and artists through literature and films, helping you improve your literacy and essay-writing techniques. • Develop critical analysis and ability to express opinions on a range of topics.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 5 and above including English and/or Mathematics. Grade 6 in Spanish.

How you'll be assessed

The topic areas detailed below, act as a vehicle through which you will study grammar in depth and ensure you acquire a very broad vocabulary which will increase your confidence and fluency by the end of the course. Social issues and trends in Hispanic society including: • Modern and traditional values (Los valores tradicionales y modernos) • Cyberspace (El ciberespacio) • Equal rights (La igualdad de los sexos) • Immigration (La Inmigración) • Racism (El Racismo) • Integration (La Convivencia) Political and artistic culture in the Hispanic world including: • Modern day idols (La influencia de los ídolos) • Spanish regional identity (La identidad regional en España) • Cultural heritage or cultural landscape (El patrimonio cultural) • Today’s youth, tomorrow’s citizens (Jóvenes de hoy, ciudadanos de mañana) • Monarchies, republics and dictatorships (Monarquías, repúblicas y dictaduras) • Popular movements (Movimientos populares)
