Authentic materials play an important role, and many DVDs, web articles, magazines and online language learning opportunities are integrated into the course. Y12 In Year 12, students will study the current social issues and trends, such as the changing nature of family life, the digital world and popular culture. They will also study the artistic culture of the countries where the language is spoken. They will also study a film in Year 12, and current 6th formers are studying “La Haine”, which won awards for its depiction of 24 hours in the lives of three young men in the French suburbs the day after a violent riot. Y13 In Year 13, students study for the A-level. The topics covered include multiculturalism, culture and different aspects of political life. They will also study a book or a play. The book currently being studied is “Bonjour Tristesse” by Françoise Sagan. They also undertake a research project on an aspect of the target language country which interests them. This not only allows them to pursue their own interests but also to develop the research skills needed for university.
5 GCSEs at a standard pass grade and at least a grade 4 in GCSE English Language and Mathematics. Grade 7 or above at GCSE is desirable, Grade 6 possible.
• Unit 1 (2 hours 30 mins) Listening and reading paper. It also includes translation into English. This is 50 % of the A-Level. • Unit 2 (2 hours) Essay paper. Students write about the film they studied in Year 12, and the book or play they studied in Year 13. This paper is worth 20% of the A-Level. • Unit 3 – Speaking exam. Students discuss one topic with the help of a stimulus card. They then present and discuss their independent research project. This exam is worth 30% of the A-Level.
