Year 1: While no qualification is gained there is still a standard and quality of work expected that will enable you to move through into the second year. In terms 1 and 2, you will be introduced to all of the new skills needed for the course. You will need to be able to work with a high level of independence and will be encouraged to explore new skills with a creative understanding. From term 2 students will begin their solo project – this year it is based around portraiture, but this is subject to change. Students should use sketchbooks to underpin and document their work where appropriate. Trips are used to further elevate the level of students' work (to support the current portraiture project students will undertake an advanced painting workshop and complete a life drawing course at Chesterfield College)
6 or above in GCSE Art
Year 2: This is a two-year course that will allow you to explore and experiment for the first year, introducing you to many techniques, and processes whilst studying the work of both contemporary and historical artists. You will then be assessed in the second year; Component 1 is the personal investigation, which forms 60% of the A-level grade. Component 2 is the externally set assignment, which forms the remaining 40% Assessed in components, each piece of work being part of the final grade. The A-level is designed to be taken over 2 years. The units will cover a range of artistic styles and genres and offer students the opportunity to work in a range of media. You may want to buy unusual materials or specialist media if you choose to use them, although most materials are supplied.
