Course summary

Photography covers an increasingly broad area through the exploration, experimentation, and expression of ideas and themes using various lenses and light-based media - the digital camera, video, photocopier, and replication. Photography will include the demonstration of appropriate technical skills in the production of a good photograph and the artistic and creative knowledge and understanding associated with observation, expression, etc. Film and video will cover competencies in using selected media as a means of communicating personal ideas. This normally includes live action and/or animation, sequential recording and editing, and various production methods. Both units consist of: Component 1 - Personal Investigation and Extended Written Study 60%. This component requires learners to develop an introductory foundation of core skills and encourage in-depth, specialist–related learning, knowledge, contextualization skills, and critical thinking. The course will culminate in a practical project/portfolio with integrated written elements (1000 words minimum). Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment 40%. This component represents the culmination of the learner’s Advanced level study and provides a substantial challenge. Learners are required to develop independent personal responses to a varied range of stimuli within specified time restraints. Art and Photography can be successfully combined with any A Level subject and can help to form part of a balanced Sixth Form education. Combined with a good portfolio of work, the Art and Design courses form an excellent path toward further study of the subject at an Art and Design College or for other Art or media-related courses in Higher Education. Careers linked with Art, Design, and Photography include architecture, graphic design, illustration, media (film and TV work), display, exhibition design, teaching, publishing, medical illustration, landscape gardening, textile design, fashion, jewelry design, interior design, and various therapies.
