Students will study three mandatory units which give an overview of Human Biology: • Principles of Applied Human Biology (assessed externally) • Practical Microbiology and Infectious Disease • Human Biology and Health Issues (assessed externally) They will also study one optional unit from a choice of Functional Physiology (we normally select this unit); Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Biomedical Science or Human Reproduction and Fertility. There is a degree of overlap in content with A Level Biology (although this qualification is assessed differently). As such it is not suitable to study both qualifications in the Sixth Form.
• Entry to the Sixth Form is based on meeting the standard entry requirements. These include the passing of Maths and English Language at a grade 4. • In addition to this we use a calculation called Attainment 8 to work out a score for students to indicate their suitability for each pathway. This score is generated by combining a students’ best 8 subject grades, counting English and Maths twice and including a minimum of three Ebacc subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Core & Additional Science, Computer Science, History, Geography, French, Spanish and German. For Waingels students this score will be included in any reports home. • Grade 5 in Biology or grade 5-5 in Combined Science: Trilogy. • Vocational Pathway (selecting only Vocational Courses): 40 (Average Grade 4)
