Course summary

The course content comprises four themes: Social development in Germany, Artistic and political culture in German-speaking countries, Immigration and multicultural Germany, and The reunification of Germany. Students will be expected to converse and write about those areas of interest as well as be able to understand reading and listening material taken from a wide range of resources, such as news items on the radio, TV, or the Internet, extracts from literature and articles from newspapers, magazines or blogs. They will be asked to translate and respond analytically to the study of a book and a film. UNIT OUTLINE The course comprises three units: - Listening, Reading, and Translating from German to English. - Written response to works and Translation from English to German. - Speaking. Due to the nature of the course, candidates are strongly advised to keep abreast of current affairs by reading newspapers, watching television documentaries, and news podcasts on the internet. The willingness to take part in class discussions and to form and express opinions is extremely important. During the course, students will benefit from access to Modern Language - German to a large bilingual dictionary. The department recommends the Harraps or Collins editions. Languages are increasingly called for in the world of commerce and industry, for translating and interpreting, and by the media and international organizations. German can often be combined with other disciplines at university. International careers can be found in banking, law, accountancy, insurance, journalism, and tourism to name but a few.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement is three 6 grades and three others at a 5 grade. At least a grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics. Students must have a grade 7 in German at GCSE.

How you'll be assessed

In addition to the lessons with the subject specialist, students will have a compulsory lesson with the Language Assistant in small groups or on a one-to-one basis to increase their confidence in expressing themselves in the language and in widening their vocabulary. Lessons are conducted for the most part in the assessed language. Students will follow the Edexcel course book. This will be supplemented by a wide variety of authentic source materials as well as TV, DVDs, and the Internet.
