The course is designed to provide a sequential and incremental opportunity for candidates to experience Art and design from a broad introductory foundation of art, craft, and design experiences. At the beginning of the course, students will be taught a range of skills, techniques, and specialist processes. As the course progresses students will embark on independent study and enquiry, showing individual outcomes and contextualisation. We offer the Art, Craft, and Design option which promotes learning across a variety of processes, tools, techniques, materials & resources to generate different kinds of evidence of working and outcomes from two or more of the following: Drawing and Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Printmaking and Textiles. Both units consist of: Component 1 - Personal Investigation and Extended Written Study 60%. This component requires learners to develop an introductory foundation of core skills and encourage in-depth, specialist–related learning, knowledge, contextualization skills, and critical thinking. The course will culminate in a practical project/portfolio with integrated written elements (1000 words minimum). Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment 40%. This component represents the culmination of the learner’s Advanced level study and provides a substantial challenge. Learners are required to develop independently a personal response to a varied range of stimuli within specified time restraints. Art can be successfully combined with any A Level subject and can help to form part of a balanced Sixth Form education. Combined with a good portfolio of work, the Art and Design courses form an excellent path toward further study of the subject at an Art and Design College or for other Art or media-related courses in Higher Education. Careers linked with Art include architecture, graphic design, illustration, media (film and TV work), display, exhibition design, teaching, publishing, medical illustration, landscape gardening, textile design, fashion, jewelry design, interior design, and various therapies.
The minimum requirement is three 6 grades and three others at a 5 grade. At least a grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics. GCSE Art and Design grade 6 or above or a grade 6 or above in Design Technology.
All work will be internally marked against the given assessment criteria. This will also include evidence of key skills. All students must include for each component, preparatory studies, supporting studies, sketchbook(s), and outcomes. Visits to major and local exhibitions will be integral to the course. Candidates may also have the opportunity to go on an Art and Design educational art trip to a foreign or overseas city during the year. Figure drawing classes are included as part of the coursework structure. Professional artists in residence are arranged when possible. Visits to Art College Open Days are encouraged. Work experience can be arranged through the department’s connections with outside agencies.
