The course is a study of language in use in different social contexts. You will learn about its structures and functions drawing on your knowledge of language change and variation. You will develop analytical skills and an understanding of different concepts and frameworks which you will be able to apply to investigate your own and others’ language use. You will learn to write creatively for a specific audience, purpose, and context. Where appropriate and available we take students on extra-curricular trips and visits. It is fascinating to step back from our use of the English language and to explore how we use language, how meanings change, and how language is learned and evolves.
