Course summary

The aims of the course are to encourage candidates to: • Identify, investigate, and outline possibilities to address the needs and wants of a specific client or user group • Design and make prototypes that are fit for purpose and solve the problem • Analyse and evaluate wider issues in design engineering. • Demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of – - technical principles of design & technology and product design - designing and making principles Product Design focuses on consumer products and applications and their analysis with respect to: - Materials, components, process, and their selection and uses in products and/or systems - The selection and use of the above in industrial commercially viable products and practices.

Entry requirements

6 or above in GCSE Product Design, Electronics, Resistant Materials, or Engineering. A 5 will be considered on teacher's recommendation

How you'll be assessed

The three mandatory units are assessed using a grading scale of A • Principles (01) written examination- 26.7% of A Level - 1 hour 30 minutes Written paper 80 marks • Problem-Solving (02) written examination withdrawing - 23.3% of A Level - 1 hour 45 minutes Written paper 70 marks • Iterative Design Project (03, 04) non-exam assessment (NEA) – 50% of A Level – The Iterative Design Project is a substantial design and make project that is individual to each learner and follows the methodology of iterative designing. Learners will be required to explore contexts of their own choosing that are both contemporary and challenging. The focus should be on identifying problems and opportunities to be resolved in an innovative way within the endorsed title they are working in. The undertaking of their project should demonstrate their self-management and a clear and thorough understanding of iterative design processes in practice.
