Course summary

The aims of the course are to encourage candidates to: Develop their interest in and enthusiasm for engineering, including developing an interest in further study and careers in engineering. Appreciate how engineers work as part of a team to solve real-world problems. Develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge, and understanding of engineering in the real world. Develop essential knowledge and understanding of engineering skills and mathematics. The course is delivered through a range of active classroom and workshop tasks, supported by independent study. Students are expected to enter into a dialogue with teaching staff inside and outside the classroom. Each unit has a recommended number of guided learning hours (GLH)

Entry requirements

5 x 9 - 4 Grade 6 or above in Mathematics, 6 or above in a technology subject, or 5 with teacher recommendation. If a technology subject has not been studied in GCSE, the school would look for a grade 6 in Mathematics and a relevant Science subject e.g. Physics

How you'll be assessed

The four mandatory units are assessed using a grading scale of Distinction (D), Merit (M), Pass (P), Near Pass (N) and Unclassified (U) Unit 1 - 'Engineering Principles' is externally assessed through an examination Unit 2 - 'Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team' is internally assessed Unit 3 - 'Engineering Product Design and Manufacture' is a timed, externally assessed practical examination Unit 4 - TBC, this will be internally assessed
