Course summary

Mathematics A Level students are in high demand by employers and those with Mathematics A Level earn, on average, 10% more than those without. Also, mathematics is the essential transferable component across all science, engineering, technology and mathematics subjects. Mathematics is also of great value in the study of economics, business, computing and law. You will be taught by experienced and enthusiastic teachers who will give you plenty of encouragement and support. A Level students study Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. Pure Mathematics covers proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration and vectors. Statistics covers statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions and hypothesis testing. Mechanics covers quantities and units, kinematics, forces and Newton’s laws. You will learn how real life situations can be modelled and analysed using mathematics. You will develop your skills in reasoning logically and learn how to construct a mathematical argument.

Entry requirements

• The minimum entry criteria is 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above preferably including English and Maths. If English and/or Maths falls below grade 4, students will be automatically entered into a re-sit GCSE group on arrival into Sixth Form. • You must achieve at least a grade 6 or above at GCSE in the relevant subject to study the course at A Level. Maths requires a grade 6 at GCSE; preferably to have been in set 1 and to have completed the higher curriculum.
