Course summary

Component 1: Exploring Non-Fiction & Spoken Texts Written paper, 1 hour – closed text, 16% of A Level One question comparing two texts – one text from the Anthology (20 non-fiction spoken and written texts across different time periods and contexts); one unseen text. Component 2: The Language of Poetry & Plays Written paper, 2 hours – closed text, 32% of A Level One question exploring set poetry; one question exploring a set play, A Streetcar Named Desire. Component 3: Reading as a writer, writing as a reader Written paper, 2 hours – open text, 32% of A Level One question on the language of The Great Gatsby; one piece of narrative creative writing with associated commentary. Component 4: Non-Examined Assessment Independent Study: Analysing and producing texts, 20% of A Level One personal investigation that explores a specific technique or theme as the basis for comparing one set non-fiction text, Stuart: A Life Backwards, and one own choice text. One piece of original non-fiction writing.

Entry requirements

Our minimum entry requirements for a full level 3 programme of study is 5 GCSE’s grade 4 or above. Grade 5 and grade 6 in any combination of English Language and English Literature.
