Course summary

There continues to be a real demand in industry for Computer Scientists and excellent job prospects.At A-Level, Computer Science offers the opportunity to study a dynamic, relevant and challenging subject. In the course, we look at how computers work, how data Is transmitted and computational thinking. Computational thinking is the thought processes involved in formulating a problem and expressing its solution in such a way that a computer can effectively carry it out. Computer Science involves questions that have the potential to change how we view the world. For example; we may be computing with DNA at some stage in the future, with computer circuits made of genes. We are already seeing exciting developments In drone deliveries, automated vehicles and space exploration. We live in a digitised and programmable world. To understand it, we need computing. Students with these skills will have a clear and marketable edge in tomorrow's world. It is valuable for those thinking of degrees and careers in a wide range of areas including Software Engineering. Network Engineering, Game Design and Media. It Is also relevant to Medicine, Engineering and Mathematics. In fact most careers will involve computing in some shape or form.

Entry requirements

- A minimum grade 7 in Computer Science is required however if GCSE Computer Science has not be studied, then a grade 8 in GCSE Mathematics is required. To be successful it is essential that you are fully committed to the course and motivated enough to pursue extensive additional research and study. You will need to be keen to read and assimilate ideas from a range of sources and to have plenty of enthusiasm. - At least eight GCSEs (including English (Language or Literature) and Mathematics at a minimum of Grade 6)

How you'll be assessed

For A-Level is by two examinations in Year 13, both worth 40% and 1.5 hours in duration. Internally assessed and externally moderated coursework is worth 20%.
