Course summary

Art, Craft, and Design is a broad course that incorporates skills from a range of techniques including drawing, painting, art textiles, and photography. You can specialize in any of these routes during your course. Art is a form of communication and a vehicle for self-expression to explore ideas and emotions. Studying Art, Craft and Design A-Level encourages you to draw upon your imagination, whilst developing observational, analytical, and practical skills. You will develop a portfolio of work that enables you to access further specialist education at Art Foundation, University, or employment opportunities within the broad design field. Art, Craft, and Design course content Fine art: Drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, installation, printmaking, art textiles and photography. Textile design: Fashion textiles, printed and/or dyed fabrics and materials, domestic textiles, wallpaper, constructed textiles, art textiles, and installed textiles. Photography: Portraiture, landscape photography, still life photography, documentary photography, photojournalism, fashion photography, experimental imagery, multimedia, photographic installation, and moving images.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE 9-5, including Math and English. 6 GCSE in Art.

How you'll be assessed

At A-level for Component 1, you will develop work for a Personal Investigation into an idea, issue, concept, or theme supported by written material (3,000 words) formed from historical contextual studies. This will count for 60% of your total A-level marks. In component 2 you will produce personal work in response to one of eight exciting starting points which will count for 40% of your total A-level marks. It is important that observational drawing and quality-making skills are present and developed throughout your portfolio.
