Course summary

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) at Level 3 is a stand-alone one year qualification, equivalent to an AS level in terms of UCAS points. It is intended to broaden your study in sixth form, and improve your independent study skills. The topic, title, and area of study is chosen by you, after discussion with a project tutor. You will be taught project skills to help you complete all stages of the work, but the subject knowledge required will be your own responsibility to research. Therefore from the outset the EPQ requires initiative and an ability to work independently. The EPQ, if carefully chosen, will give you the opportunity to demonstrate additional skills to those in your other sixth form courses. If your other courses are mainly based around essay writing then you can choose a more applied EPQ, making a product, film, website or other digital outcome. If your other courses are already more applied, or maths and science, then the EPQ will allow you to demonstrate ability to write in an academic style.

Entry requirements

Students must achieve 5 qualifications at Grade 4 or above to return to 6th Form at PCHS.

How you'll be assessed

Your project can be an extended essay (5,000 words) or research study, an artefact or model, an electronic submission (e.g. video, animation, resourcefulness, review and presentation skills. These are demonstrated through the project production log, and a final project presentation to a non-specialist audience.
