Course summary

Unit 1: In this unit, students will focus on the impact of positive relationships among managers, colleagues and individuals requiring care and support in health and social care settings. Unit 2: In this unit, students will explore the implications of diversity on practice and also the effects of discriminatory practice on individuals who require care or support. They will also gain an appreciation of how legislation and national initiatives can support and promote anti-discriminatory practices. Unit 3: This unit introduces students to health, safety, and security in health and social care. They will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a safe working environment. Students will learn how legislation, policies and procedures work to reduce risks in health and social care and the consequences of not following them. Also, students will investigate how to respond to different incidents and emergencies in health and social care settings. Unit 4: This unit aims to introduce students to the basic structure and functions of the body systems involved in everyday activities and maintenance of health, including cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems. Students will also understand the part played by organs such as the pancreas, liver, and kidney. We will investigate the systems and organs involved in detecting and responding to change such as the nervous system as well as the eyes and ears. Unit 13: This unit will look at the development from conception to a one-year-old child. On successful completion, students will have a sound understanding of the importance of sexual health and contraception. Students will understand pre-natal health and the various stages of pregnancy and the factors that could have an impact. Unit 24: Public health is concerned with protecting and improving the health of the population, rather than focusing on the health of the individual. Through this unit, students will develop an understanding of the ways public health and well-being is promoted to benefit society as a whole and to reduce health inequalities. Students will gain an understanding of current public health strategies and initiatives and consider the effectiveness and implications of health policy for the wider population.
