At AS level pupils will: ● Explore different areas of study that will include The Western Classical Tradition, Choral Music in the Baroque Period, Music Theatre, British Popular Music 1960’s to the present day, and the study of set works. ● Learn how to compose in either a free or pastiche style and how to arrange music (including music technology). ● Learn about different ways of interpreting musical ideas through either live performing or music technology. ● Pupils will develop their listening, analytical skills, and practical/performing skills. At the A2 level pupils will: ● Explore the different periods of music from Baroque through to music of the modern day. This will include learning about different musical genres from Classical to Pop and Minimalist to jazz. Pupils will also study the development of musical ideas through various compositional techniques and arranging (including music technology). ● Learn about producing a high-quality musical performance through either live performance or music technology.
GCSE Music Grade 6 and above or Grade 5 theory ABRSM (certificate required). All Students must be Grade 5 standard or above on a practical instrument or voice. All Students must also be able to read music.
At AS level pupils will be assessed through a 1 hour 45 minute 3 section written and listening exam based on the areas of study and the set works, composition coursework based on briefs released on the 1st November, and performance coursework that may be completed at any time during the year. At A2 level pupils will be assessed through a 2 hour 15 minute 3 section written and listening exam based on the areas of study and the set work, composition coursework based on briefs released on the 1st November and performance coursework that may be completed at any time during the year.
