If you are studying A Levels with some mathematics in, or looking for a career that needs some maths, but don’t feel that A Level Maths is right for you then Core Mathematics is an ideal option. Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a new qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade 4 or above at GCSE. It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A Level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications. This qualification will count as an AS equivalent and is taken over two years with half the timetabled lessons of other A Level courses. Mathematical Studies is taken over two years and is equivalent to an AS qualification. The course content focuses on problem-solving and approaches mathematics from an applied perspective.
Grade 4 or above in Maths. 5 or more grades 5-9; including equivalents across at least 5 subjects. English Language Grade 4 or above. Average GCSE GRADE of at least 4.0 (average of ALL GCSE full courses taken).
Homework tasks and PPE will help to focus your attention on areas of strength and development over the two years in which you will be studying. There will be a final written external examination at the end of year 13 to determine your overall grade. There is no coursework with Mathematical Studies.
