Course summary

'A level history offers a broad and coherent course of study, consisting of two examined units and one personal study completed as a historical investigation. The breadth study is the Tudors: 1485 - 1603 which enables students to gain and understanding of the nature of causes and consequences, of change and continuity and of similarity and differ ences over a long period of time; links between perspectives, such as political, economic, social or religious and the role played by individuals, groups, ideas or ideology. The depth study is the Cold War: 1945-1991 which helps students to develop deep understanding of change and continuity through the study of the interrelationships of a variety of perspectives; they will develop detailed knowledge and understanding of developments and the roles of individuals, groups, ideas and ideology. The depth study also promotes an understanding of the complexity of historical process through a detailed focus on the Cold War as a period of change. The personal study requires a historical Investigation of a specific issue or question in the context of approximately one hundred years; this usually focuses on the causes of the First World War and the extent to which Germany was to blame.' You will develop your analytical skills, source analysis and evaluation, and your ability to construct a clear argument - abilities of value to many employers.

Entry requirements

At least 5 courses successfully at the following levels; 9 – 5 (or equivalent) at GCSE, or level 2 BTEC/CTEC/VCERT.

How you'll be assessed

80% exams. 20% non-exam assessment.
