Course Outline The course involves the study of a wide range of literary and nonliterary texts. ‘Literary texts’ are defined as those that are drawn from the three main literary genres of prose fiction, poetry and drama. ‘Non-literary’ includes non-fiction but also texts and data that are not formally published and marketed, for example, personal letters, spontaneous speech and multimedia texts. Non-literary texts could also be charts and diagrams, transcripts and lists. Students develop their subject expertise through analytical and creative tasks, using literary and linguistic concepts and methods. Students also develop skills as producers and interpreters of language by creating texts themselves and critically reflecting on their own processes of production. The key areas of learning embedded in the specification will help students to develop the key critical, creative and analytical skills required both for progression to higher education and for enhanced employability. Students must be prepared to undertake a wide range of independent study, involving extensive reading of texts from different genres in order to build up the skills and knowledge necessary for study of the subject at this level.
