The course involves a wide range of interesting topics with a balance of physical and human geography themes: Unit 1 - Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes • Water and Carbon Cycles • Hot Desert Environments • Hazards Unit 2 - Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes • Global systems and global governance • Changing places • Contemporary urban environments Unit 3 - Written report • 3,000-4,000 words based on coasts or urban fieldwork, depending on students' area of interest. A compulsory part of the course is fieldwork. This will involve being out of school, for 4 days overall, in different locations, supporting your classroom studies, collecting primary data, and preparing for your independent investigation which is unit 3 of the course.
You do not need to have any experience or qualifications in this subject but will need a minimum of five level 5 GCSE grades, or equivalent.
Exam papers are accessible and include a range of assessment styles, from multiple choice questions, short 4,6,9 mark questions, and also 20 mark questions. A range of case study examples will be taught through the 2 years. Geography is extremely topical and you will be expected to keep abreast of current affairs through the use of news reports, social media, and independent research, as well as wider reading around the subject.
