A level Italian is for students seeking the opportunity to study and experience all aspects of the Italian language and culture of Italy. Students will study a range of topics and will develop their knowledge and understanding through speaking, listening, reading and writing in Italian. The study of literature and film will allow students to analyse language structures and increase their cultural and grammatical awareness. The course has a very strong focus on building students’ confidence and fluency in spoken and written Italian. Students will develop a range of other skills including independent research and critical and analytical thinking skills. There are four themes, one of which is the historical study of Italy from the rise of Mussolini (1918) to the birth of the European Union (1957), which includes significant events which have helped shape the country.
6 GCSEs between 9 to 4 (A*-C) for including 2 of English, Maths or Science. 2 should be at least grade 6 (B). GCSE Italian grade 9-6 (A*-B) OR native speakers of Italian on consultation with the department at enrolment.
Paper 1 (40%): Listening, reading and translating from Italian to English This paper draws on vocabulary and structures across all four themes listed in the grid. Paper 2 (30%): Written response to works and translation from English to Italian This paper draws on the study of either two literary texts or one literary text and one film. The works must be taken from a list of prescribed literary texts and films. Paper 3 (30%): Speaking, Internally conducted and externally assessed Task 1 draws on vocabulary and structures across all four themes (see grid). Task 2 is based on independent research selected and carried out by the student. The research may be based on one of the themes or on the student’s own subject of interest related to Italian-speaking society and culture.
