History is the study of civilisations, governments, politics and most importantly people. The course, and more broadly the subject, is designed to encourage young adults to formulate perceptions of the past based on well researched evidence. The subject drives young people to write with fluency, accuracy and conviction. Students will be taught a range of diverse topics which encourages independent thought and a reflection on the contemporary world. In Year 12 students study the concept of revolution, in Britain between 1625-1701, and Russia between 1894-1924. The theme of revolution serves to unite both topics as does the examination itself which both share similar source-based questions, as well as a selection of non-source, essay questions. In Year 13, students go on to cover Civil Rights and Race Relations between 1850-2009 as well as an independent piece of coursework in which students devise their own enquiry. The subject helps to develop written and verbal communication and a sense of self; aiming to support students to identify the difference between misinformation, opinion and fact.
