Course summary

The BTEC Level 3 in Engineering is a nationally recognised work-related qualification, which encompasses mechanical and electrical elements designed to give you a good start on your journey to a career in engineering. The course is based around examined units and internally assessed assignment lead units that are aligned to realistic vocational situations, activities and demands. The course will introduce you to and prepare you for the engineering workplace. This course provides a good basis to progress onto a higher qualification, such as a university, a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND). Alternatively, it can help you progress to an apprenticeship in an engineering discipline. During this course you will study a variety of mandatory and optional Engineering units to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours of the engineering profession. Mandatory units: • Engineering Principles • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture • Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering • A Specialist Engineering Project • Microcontroller Systems for Engineers • Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems. Optional units could include: • Computer Aided Design in Engineering • Electronic Devices and Circuits • Electronic Measurement and Testing of Circuits • Static Mechanical Principles in Practice • Principles and Applications of Fluid Mechanics • Modern Manufacturing Systems • Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes • Additive Manufacturing Processes

Entry requirements

For this course, you will need to have achieved the following: • 4 GCSE's at grades 4 or above including English and Science. • Maths GCSE at grade 5. Or a Level 2 qualification in an Engineering-related subject with an overall Level 2 Merit, GCSE Maths at Grade 5 or above and GCSE English at Grade 4 or above. On receipt of your application to study this course, you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the engineering teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements in detail.

How you'll be assessed

During the course you will carry out a number of assignments, internal and external tasks/exams set by the awarding body. • Unit 1 – Engineering Principles is externally set and marked exam. • Unit 3 – Engineering Product Design and Manufacture is a task-based externally set and marked exam. • Unit 6 - Microcontroller Systems for Engineers is a task-based externally set and marked exam. All other units are internally assessed. You will also have the opportunity to produce a work-related project that will allow you to creatively utilise and apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours you have developed throughout this course.
