A level music is taught from the OCR specification and follows a similar breakdown to OCR GCSE music with 60% coursework and 40% listening exam. Topics studied at A level are: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven; Programme music 1820-1910, Instrumental Jazz, Popular Song (Blues, Jazz, Swing and Big Band). Students engage with music theory tasks, listening, score reading and annotations in order to develop their understanding of these in depth music topics. In the second year of the course students participate in a recital to showcase their performance work. Two compositions are written by students through the course, one of which is free choice and one is to a brief set by the exam board.
