Anyone moving on from GCSE or level 2 qualifications with an interest in practical work, design and creativity. A level product design, when taken alongside other subjects will prepare you for a range of design related jobs, apprenticeships and degree courses. You'll explore product design in its widest sense through the stages of prototyping, realisation and commercial manufacture. You'll develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of materials, components and the processes of manufacturing as well as exploring design principles. You'll research the market and come up with your own innovative ideas to make prototypes and products that solve real-world problems. You'll develop practical skills such as using CAD and 3D modelling, drawing and design presentation techniques, model making and using workshop machinery alongside learning about the wider social, moral and environmental issues that impact on the design and manufacturing industries.
- Subject-specific criteria: No previous experience in Design and Technology is needed. You should achieve a minimum of 40 points from your best eight GCSEs and achieve a grade 4 or above in Mathematics and English. However, we understand there might be extenuating circumstances and we will consider applications and interview students who don’t quite meet the criteria. - Currently, entry requirements for The Sandon Sixth Form are Level 4 in Maths and English. Average of 40 points from 8 GCSEs.
Through two examinations at the end of Year 13 and a major project which takes the form of a design and make task based on a theme given by the examination board.
