A-Level Mathematicians study Pure Mathematics; this involves the challenge of problem-solving and extends their knowledge of topics like algebra, vectors, trigonometry, and calculus. In addition to Pure Mathematics, students will also cover some Statistics and Mechanics which cover Measures of Location and Spread, Probability, Correlation, Hypothesis Testing, Dynamics, and Forces. A Level Mathematics is an exciting and interesting course that goes beyond the basics of addition and subtraction and delves into the worlds of advanced algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mathematical modeling and more. The subject is suited to those who enjoy a challenge, who like the clarity of a correct solution, and who have the ability to use logical thought and formulate a problem in a way that allows for computation and decision. Advanced Mathematics can lead to a number of educational and career opportunities, making the A Level course one of the most versatile you can study, and it will be an asset in whatever career path you decide to take.
5 GCSEs at a standard pass grade and at least a grade 4 in GCSE English Language and Mathematics. Grade 7 at GCSE Mathematics.
Students are assessed in the Summer of Year 13 with three written papers; ‘Pure Mathematics 1’, ‘Pure Mathematics 2’ and ‘Statistics and Mechanics’. Each paper is two hours long and worth one-third of the final grade.
