Economics asks questions like ‘Why is a high level of inflation bad for employment?’ or ‘Why do doctors earn more than nurses?’ Economics helps develop an enquiring, critical and thoughtful ‘economist's mind’. Key skills involve analysing, explaining, applying and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of various economic concepts. In Year 12 the course gives an introduction to demand, supply and market failure. In Year 13 the course looks at concepts such as inflation and unemployment and how they can be influenced by the government. Economics gives students a better understanding of how the world works and the impact government decisions have on job prospects and the quality of life.
