Course summary

Biology at Advanced GCE level will enable you to develop an appreciation of its significance. It is a subject that can provide you with great enjoyment and respect for all things living. This course develops many of the topics you may have already studied and introduces you to some of the exciting areas of Biology in the contemporary world. You may study, for example, the influence that genes have on our development, environmental issues and aspects of human health. Biology is a practical science subject so you will develop experimental skills and an understanding of the scientific method. It is hoped that this course will help you gain some understanding of the dynamic and exciting nature of biology today, and an awareness of the ethical, technological and economic aspects of the subject. Assessment of the Biology course is 100% externally assessed by examination and includes an assessment of practical skills and mathematical skills throughout the course.

Entry requirements

5 X 9-4 Grades, including Grade 9 – 4 English and Mathematics GCSE Science Combined Grade 5/5 or above, or GCSE Biology 9-5 GCSE Maths 9-5 (Higher Tier only)

How you'll be assessed

3 x Exams (33.3% weighting each)covering all the course in each paper 1 hour 30 minutes each All papers will assess candidate’s practical skills through practical-based exam questions. Each paper will also have approximately 10% maths content.
