The Chemistry Department at Greenhead College is one of the largest in the country, with eleven teachers and four technicians. You will receive exceptional tuition with outstanding provision. Chemistry is the central science. It is essential for many degree courses (e.g. medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy) and highly desirable for many others. Achieving chemistry A Level will prove you have strengths in many areas; numeracy, problem-solving, practical skills and the ability to apply subject knowledge. Our considerable experience and diversity allow us to offer extensive additional support, catering for those who need help coping with the transition to Post 16 studies, through to the most able. The department also runs a programme whereby Year 13 students mentor the Year 12 intake. In addition, the department has strong links with many universities and the chemical industry. On their last visit, OFSTED rated the department outstanding in all areas. The course is a traditional one; students will cover a broad range of disciplines from within Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. Topics include Acids and Bases, Transition Metals and Amino Acids, Proteins & DNA. There will also be considerable scope for developing practical skills and techniques. A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A Level qualification. The course is now linear. The A Level now comprises three, two-hour exams at the end of the two years.
Minimum entry requirement is grade 6 in three GCSE subjects. All students must have achieved a minimum grade 4 in both GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics. Grades 6/6 in GCSE Science and Grade 6 in GCSE Maths OR Grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry AND Grade 6 in GCSE Maths.
