Course summary

Choose BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Science at Brighouse Sixth Form College and study a demanding level 3 vocational qualification that contains elements of all three sciences. The course covers some of the theories found in the separate science A-level courses but sets it in a real-world context. In this course, students will not only learn scientific theory, but how scientific professionals use this understanding to carry out their jobs. In addition to learning the main scientific principles associated with Biology, Chemistry and Physics, students will also cover experimental and practical techniques associated with applied science. This course is ideal for students who may be interested in a career in nursing, healthcare, forensic science, sports science and food nutrition. It is also an excellent qualification for students who want to study a broad range of subjects and still have an interest in science. Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science - Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of cell structure, cell specialisation, cardiovascular system, nervous system, atomic structure, bonding, structure and properties, waves and communication. A strong grasp of these concepts will enable students to use and apply this knowledge and understanding in vocational contexts when studying other units. Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques - Students will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries. They will undertake several analytical and experimental techniques, learn, practice and then use these techniques in a vocational context. They will then produce a report in which they analyse and evaluate the data they have collected. Unit 3: Science Investigations Skills - Students will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate. They will practice these skills in various vocational contexts before completing the controlled assessment. Unit 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems - Students will develop their knowledge of the physiological makeup of three human body systems (musculoskeletal, lymphatic and digestive), how the systems function and what occurs during dysfunction. They will then produce a report covering these points.
