Course summary

OCR A Level in Music provides a contemporary, academic, and creative education in Music with an integrated approach to the three main elements of performing, composing, and appraising. Pupils are stretched theoretically and encouraged to be creative and to broaden their musical horizons and understanding.

Entry requirements

Post-16 Pathway TWO students can only select one qualification from this category. Individual suitability for this course will be assessed by looking at GCSE results during enrolment – this may include looking at GCSE achievement within the same (or similar) subjects. There are no subject-specific entry requirements for this course for Pathway THREE students.

How you'll be assessed

The table below outlines the requirements of the course and how each component is assessed. Performance: 35% - 10-15 minutes and 3 contrasting pieces Pupils will take part in a live performance in front of an audience that will be video recorded and submitted to the exam board. Composing: 25% - 2 original compositions with the combined duration of at least 4 minutes Composition recordings will be accompanied by a score and submitted as part of coursework completed during the course. Listening and appraising: 40% - Analysing and evaluating music - Unfamiliar and familiar pieces are presented - Questions based on aural extracts Written exam lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes, including listening extracts. There will be a a mixture of questions testing aural recognition, contextual understanding, and extended writing skills.
