Kings Priory School is a popular choice to study A-level music for pupils who show both an academic interest and practical ability. Music is available to a wide range of pupils who all have different and varied backgrounds and experiences. The new AQA specification will provide pupils with the knowledge and experience required for all forms of further and higher education. It will also give an understanding, and encourage an appreciation, of musical genres in many contexts. Areas of Study 3 and 4 focus on musical knowledge, perception, and awareness, through the study of set pieces and listening to a variety of music and musical styles. This not only deals with music from an analytical point of view but also probes deeper into cultural and historical wrapping. Set works from Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, specified by AQA, provide the focus for some of the paper, whilst more student/ teacher-chosen case studies form another component of these areas of study. Pupils can choose from a range of compositional assignments for controlled assessment allowing pupils to explore areas they enjoy and are interested in themselves. This allows pupils to demonstrate their ability to create and develop musical ideas with technical control and expressive understanding, making creative use of musical devices, conventions, and resources. Of course, performance is a large component of the course. Lessons are available from our team of visiting teachers, or some pupils stay with private teachers. Pupils are also encouraged to get involved in the extensive extra-curricular program Kings Priory School has to offer.
Grade 6 GCSE Music is required (Consideration of candidates with a strong musical background is possible). Minimum performance standard should be equivalent to ABRSM Grade 5 and students must be able to read treble and clef fluently.
