Course summary

An enthusiastic, highly motivated, and well-resourced department. It is offering an academic A-level at KS5. It is an exciting and varied subject that will open student’s minds to a range of theories within such a colossal field of study. Students will be supported throughout the two years of study and beyond to ensure they reach their full potential and expose themselves to new skills and careers. Many students studying Psychology go on to university to study the subject at the undergraduate level and beyond! Year 12 Term 1: We will begin ‘Approaches in psychology’ – an exam based unit which will give you an understanding of the main areas in psychology. You will sit this exam at the beginning of term 2. Term 2: Research in psychology – in the second term you will complete your research project. Term 3: After submitting your research project, we will start health psychology. This is the study of health-related behaviors and behavioral change. Year 13 Term 1: After the summer holidays we will complete the health psychology unit which is an exam-based unit, which will be sat at the beginning of term 2. Term 2: Criminal and forensic psychology – this is a coursework-based unit, looking at psychological approaches to explaining and treating criminal behavior. Term 3: This term will be used for completing coursework as well as revising and preparing for your final exams.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C or 5 grade 9 - 4 GCSE’s.

How you'll be assessed

Btec Psychology is made up of internally and externally assessed units and so consists of coursework and an exam in each year. You will be expected to sit two, 90-minute exams at the end of each year alongside your coursework and completing your own research experiment.
