Course summary

What happens when a nerve impulse travels down our neurons? Why do some people have allergies? Can we really create clones? Why do some people’s genetics make them more predisposed to getting cancer? These are all questions you will be able to answer after studying A level Biology, the fascinating science of living things, what they do, and why they do it. Course Content • Biological molecules. • Cells. • Organisms exchanging substances. • Genetic information and variation. • Energy transfers. • Organisms respond to the environment. • Genetics, populations, evolution, and ecosystems. • The control of gene expression. Opportunities and experiences in Biology • Visits and talks including RSPB Saltholme. • We are hoping to host “Operating Theatre Live —become a Doctor for the Day!”. • Dissections. • Links within the community to help you gain work experience in this field.

Entry requirements

You will need to achieve five or more “4” grades including Grade 6 in Biology or 6-6 in Double Award Science

How you'll be assessed

At the end of Year 13 you will take three papers, each 2 hours long. You will also be required to complete a write-up of 12 practicals within the two years.
