Course summary

Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of photographic media, techniques, and processes. They will be made aware of both traditional and new technologies. Students will explore relevant images, artifacts, and resources relating to a range of arts, crafts, and designs, from the past and from recent times, including European and non-European examples. This will be integral to the investigating and making processes. Students' responses to these examples will be shown through practical and critical activities that demonstrate their understanding of different styles, genres, and traditions. The course is designed to stimulate interest and enjoyment in students and contribute to their development as thinking, responsible, and visually literate individuals. Extensive opportunities are given to the student to develop his/her descriptive, interpretive, and analytical skills whilst an emphasis is placed on acquiring necessary subject-based skills and knowledge. Students will use digital sketchbooks to present their work. A research journal will also be used to underpin their work where appropriate and house practical experiments. Students may wish to develop their drawing skills to produce storyboards, thumbnail sketches, and/or diagrams, where appropriate. Annotation of contact sheets is essential. Students will use traditional methods and/or digital techniques to produce images. Students will be aware of the four assessment objectives to be demonstrated in the context of the content and skills presented and of the importance of process as well as product. This course is suitable for people who are well motivated and committed to Photography and the Arts generally. A computer at home is essential for students to be able to access their work outside of the classroom. The subject is taught by two senior members of the department. On-going discussion about work projects and Photographic issues is an important method of immersing the students in thinking about all aspects of their work, and the work of practicing artists and craftspeople.
