Course summary

Geography is an exciting and ever-changing subject. Whether it is earthquakes and volcanoes explosively changing people’s lives in a matter of moments, changing weather and climate demanding a shift in the way people live for the future, wars over water, fuel, or food that impact even us in the UK, or looking at which countries might be overpopulated for the future, Geography is a subject which speaks to almost every part of life. The A-level Geography course therefore is designed to stimulate and challenge, causing students to enquire about the way the world operates and the relationship humans have with the environment. The course studies up-to-date events and processes, enabling students to develop analysis and decision making skills about geographical issues. Theoretical contexts will also be investigated, and applied, to real-life situations. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to develop valuable fieldwork skills, applying geographical knowledge and understanding in a practical way. A level of Geography offers a natural progression from GCSE. This engaging and flexible course gives students the opportunity to: - Engage with the relationship of human populations to each other over space and time. - Study the relationship between human populations with their physical environment at a variety of scales from the local to the global. - Consider their role in themes and issues being studied and the roles, values, and attitudes of others including decision makers. An independent project will also be undertaken, enabling students to investigate an area of geography that they find interesting, whilst gathering data to analyze, evaluate, and write into a structured report. Teacher guidance will be given. Included in the course will be a residential fieldwork trip. The cost of the trip will need to be met, although subsidies are available in some circumstances. Also, depending on the numbers, further fieldwork day trips may be organized locally. These will allow students to collect data about both physical and human geographical concepts to use in class and to learn geographical fieldwork techniques and skills that can be used within the independent project.
