This course is designed with a focus on the integration of language and literature, the course enables students to see how linguistic and literary methods are related and explore these links in their work. Students will engage creatively and independently with a variety of spoken, written and multi-modal texts.
You will need to have Grades 5-9 in the new GCSEs to undertake a course at this level. It is an academically demanding course and you will need to have secured a good pass at GCSE in either English Language or English Literature and ideally in both. Additionally, we would welcome students who have enjoyed studying English at Mosslands, who have an interest in Literature and read widely, and who would like to develop their creative writing skills at a higher level.
Paper 1: Telling Stories (40% of A Level) Remembered Places – the representation of place Imagined Worlds – point of view and genre in prose Poetic Voices – the forms and functions of poetic voice Methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities. Assessed: Written Exam 3 Hours, 100 marks. Paper 2: Exploring Conflict (40% of A Level) Writing about society – the role of the individual in society, recreative tasks based on set texts Critical commentary evaluating own writing Dramatic encounters – conflict in drama Methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities. Assessed: Written Exam 3 Hours, 100 marks, 40% of A Level. Non-Exam Assessment (Coursework 20% of A Level Making connections, an investigation on a chosen theme and text Methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities. Assessed: Assessed by teacher and Moderated by AQA, 50 marks Task: A personal investigation that explores a specific technique or theme in both literary and non- literary discourse (2,500 to 3,000 words).
