The course consists of four components taught over two years: Year 12 – Nationalism, dictatorship and democracy in twentieth-century Europe. • Breadth Study: Germany and West Germany, 1918 - 89 • Depth Study: The rise and fall of fascism in Italy, c1911-46 The First World War sent shockwaves around the globe, affecting politics, society and economics around the world. The post-1918 world proved to be a great challenge. Both Germany and Italy emerged from WW1 as changed societies which led to the rise of far-right-wing politics (Hitler and Mussolini). Eventually, the world will end up at war again leading to the debate: How far Hitler’s foreign policy was responsible for the Second World War. After losing the war we see a return to democratic government in both countries. Both units will look at the challenges faced in Germany and Italy before, during and after the rule of an extremist government. Year 13: Depth Study: Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors 1485 – 1603. This unit will explore the nature of rebellion and disorder under the Tudors and the way the various challenges were met, the nature of change in government over the period and the changing relationship between the Crown and key sections of society.
