This course encourages students to develop their interest in English Literature through reading widely, critically and independently. Texts range across centuries, genre and gender. Students are encouraged to become informed, independent readers of literary texts and gain an understanding of a variety of views about texts through studying a selection from each of these components. • Pre-1900 poetry – Selected poem by John Donne • Post-1900 poetry: Philip Larkin and Carol Ann Duffy • Shakespeare play: King Lear • Pre and post-1900 Drama: The Duchess of Malfi, by John Webster, and A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams • Prose study for coursework- Based on two texts. One from pre-1900 and one from post-1900. Likely to be Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte paired with a post-2000 text from a pre-selected list.
GCSE Grade 5 or above English Literature and English Language.
