This programme of study is a practical, work related course aimed at teaching you about the science industry and employment area you have chosen. You will be developing the skills you will need to start your career or move into Higher Education and there is a focus on the practical elements of the subject. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demand as well as completing external exams in both first and second year. The first year of the course allows you to achieve a Foundation Diploma in Applied Science. On successful completion you may progress to the second year and complete a Diploma or Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Biomedical Science). Most students progress onto science or health related courses/careers and the biomedical element of the second year enables students to study more specific units. The wide range of subjects taught enables a breadth of choice on completion. Core Units: - Principles and Applications of Science I - Practical Scientific Procedures & Techniques - Science Investigation Skills Specialist Units: - Laboratory Techniques & Their Applications - Principles and Applications of Science II - Investigative Project - Contemporary Issues in Science - Physiology of Human Body Systems - Human Regulation and Reproduction - Microbiological Techniques - Electrical Circuits and their Application - Genetics and Genetic Engineering - Practical Chemical Analysis - Biomedical science - Applications of Organic Chemistry - Applications of Inorganic Chemistry
4 GCSEs at grade 4 which must include science at grade 4 and maths or English must be at grade 4, with the other being at least a grade 3.
The course is assessed via assignments set within the college. There are two examinations during year one for the science units and exams in maths or English should you be re-sitting those. There are two exams in the second year which rely on students applying their knowledge and understanding to areas across the science field.
