Course summary

History gives you an insight into how historians investigate and interpret the past and provides the tools to examine historical and contemporary sources to determine their reliability and utility. This subject allows you to develop the skills of a working historian by understanding the historical key concepts of change, continuity, causation, consequence, significance and perspectives. Our early modern history route examines revolutions in early modern and modern Europe, with a focus upon the English civil wars and the French Revolution. During the second year, you will study political agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain, as well as completing a coursework module. This will provide you with an opportunity to produce an independent research project investigating why historians disagree about an issue of your choosing. In addition, students will have the opportunity to involve themselves in community projects, as well as a residential abroad.

Entry requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 5 range including English.

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed through three written examinations at the end of your second year. You are also required to submit a 4,000-word coursework essay.
