Course summary

Students will study a broad range of Biology and Biochemistry based topics ranging from the building blocks of life, to how whole ecosystems function, and the interactions that occur within and between species. It is hoped that students will develop a passion for the subject and awareness and understanding of Biology in today’s society, and be able to apply the knowledge gained from their study in a variety of different contexts.

Entry requirements

It is expected that students will have a knowledge and understanding of Biology at Grade 6 or above in GCSE Combined Science or Grade 6 and above in single-award Biology. In addition, students are required to have a Grade 6 or higher in GCSE Maths. It is desirable to have a keen interest in the subject and the willingness to do extra reading, as this will assist students greatly with the scope of the topic. A Level key topics: • Biological molecules • Cells • Organisms exchange substances with their environment • Genetic information, variation, and relationships between organisms • Energy transfers in and between organisms • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems • The control of gene expression
